"Seeing Messi, he's still performing at the elite level," Kane stated after England's 2-1 loss to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinals on 15/7. This observation has led the striker to reconsider the traditional boundaries of a football career. "Because of that, I don't want to put limits on my own career. It's too soon to discuss the future. For me, I always assess everything year by year."
At 39, Messi remains the driving force leading Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final. Witnessing the superstar sustain his peak form nearing 40 has convinced Kane that age is not an absolute barrier for a player.

In the semifinal, England took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon but failed to maintain their advantage. The "Three Lions" conceded control of the game to Argentina and paid the price. Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute, followed by Lautaro Martinez's header in the second minute of stoppage time, securing a 2-1 victory and sending the defending champions to the final against Spain.
The loss to Argentina also meant Kane once again missed out on a title with the national team, despite consistently leading England's attack for years. In this World Cup, Kane scored 6 goals and provided one assist, ranking him among the tournament's top attacking players. Beyond his attacking duties, the Bayern striker frequently dropped deep to link play. Kane's involvement in building up play from midfield, often leaving the penalty area, was a frequent sight throughout the tournament.
Should he feature in the 2030 World Cup, Kane would be 36, an age when many strikers have retired from the elite level. Yet, many stars, such as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, have sustained their abilities to continue their peak careers past 35.
Despite this, Kane is not yet ready to make any commitments regarding his long-term international future. Following the disappointment of the semifinal elimination, he needs time to regroup. He reaffirmed his dedication to the Three Lions, stating, "Wearing the England shirt is the greatest pride and joy of my life. It's what I love more than anything."
His enduring love for the national team jersey is a motivation for Kane to continue his commitment and potentially aim for his 4th World Cup in 2030. However, the English striker noted that a final decision is not imminent.
