Kompany: 'the tie between Bayern and Real is not over'

Despite beating Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, coach Vincent Kompany remains cautious, urging Bayern Munich players not to celebrate prematurely.

"Any victory at the Bernabeu is crucial. We hold an advantage before the home second leg," Kompany said after the 2-1 win in Madrid. "We respect Real because they are dangerous, but Bayern has also shown that. This team always has the right to dream of victory when playing well. For the next match, we will reset mentally and try to win again in Munich."

At the Bernabeu, Bayern started confidently, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane within 46 minutes. Even after Kylian Mbappe scored a close-range goal for Real, Kompany's team retains a significant advantage for the return leg at their home stadium, Allianz.

However, Real Madrid is renowned for their classic comebacks. On their path to winning the 2021-2022 title, they consistently overturned deficits against PSG (round of 16), Chelsea (quarter-finals), and Man City (semi-finals) before defeating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. In the 2023-2024 semi-final, Real drew 2-2 with Bayern in the first leg and trailed 0-1 in the second leg at the Bernabeu. Yet, in the final 5 minutes, substitute striker Joselu scored a brace, securing a comeback victory for the Spanish team. They then went on to defeat Dortmund 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

Consequently, when questioned about Real's potential for a comeback, Kompany maintained a cautious stance. "We understand our opponent well, but we also believe in ourselves. Defeating the strongest team in the competition is always a significant challenge," the 39-year-old coach said. "I am pleased with this result, but everything is not over. We will not become overly excited. If the team secures another victory next week, then our joy will be complete."

Mbappe's close-range tap-in narrowed the gap to 1-2 for Real. *FC Bayern*.

On the opposing side, coach Alvaro Arbeloa attributed the team's setback to errors, yet he expressed continued confidence in their ability to secure a semi-final spot. "We lost possession two times, which we were instructed to avoid, and against an opponent like Bayern, you will be punished," he stated.

Nevertheless, the Spanish coach believed Mbappe's goal, which reduced the deficit, instilled significant confidence in Real. According to Arbeloa, Real can absolutely stage a comeback with only a one-goal difference. "If we had lost 0-2, everything would be very difficult, but one goal helps us maintain our chances," he explained.

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni also stressed the team's need for significant improvement in the return leg in Germany next week. He stated: "We aim to win in Munich, but we must perform better. When we fall behind, things become more challenging. However, we are confident we can achieve something special if we play to our full potential."
