Malaysia is set to play Vietnam at 7 PM on tuesday 31/3, with the match broadcast on VnExpress.
"This is our last group stage match, and it is for self-respect," Safawi stated before the training session on 25/3. "Despite not being able to qualify, the entire team is still aiming for a positive result, even when playing away from home. The team's spirit has not diminished after what happened. We are all optimistic before the match on 31/3."

Last year, Malaysia was handed 0-3 forfeits for their victories against Vietnam (4-0) and Nepal (2-0) in the qualifiers. This was due to the team using naturalized players with falsified documents. That decision directly propelled Kim Sang-sik's squad into the finals, securing five consecutive wins. Meanwhile, Malaysia, along with Laos and Nepal, are eliminated.
For this training camp, Malaysia's squad includes 10 mixed-heritage players and three naturalized players without ancestral ties. According to Safawi, the presence of many experienced players helps Malaysia maintain its competitiveness. "We still have familiar faces in the national team," he added. "The whole team is focused and positive as we prepare to face Vietnam."
The naturalization fraud scandal is viewed by fans as a national disgrace for Malaysia. Therefore, Peter Cklamovski's squad is determined to secure three points at Thien Truong Stadium to "restore honor." Safawi repeatedly emphasized the element of self-respect, considering it the primary motivation for the visiting team.
Safawi debuted for the Malaysian national team in 2016, scoring 22 goals in 69 matches. This season, he is in good form for Kuala Lumpur City club with 12 goals and three assists. The 29-year-old midfielder hopes to bring that performance to the national team. If given the chance to play, he said he will work hard to prove his worth.
Due to naturalized striker Bergson's absence, Safawi might be deployed as a central striker instead of his preferred wing position. He expressed readiness to adapt to this role: "If the coach needs me to play in a different role, I will try my best to perform well. The important thing is to contribute to the team."
Safawi also addressed fan skepticism, with some suggesting he is past his peak. "Fans have the right to express their opinions, but I believe in what I demonstrate. The numbers will speak for themselves," he hinted, referring to his club performance.
Malaysia is currently training in Thailand and will have a closed-door friendly with a local club before traveling to Vietnam on 27/3. Before this match, Kim's team will also play a friendly against Bangladesh at Hang Day Stadium on the evening of 26/3.
