Mikel Arteta had promised that his Arsenal side would play to win, not just defend, and they delivered. Things could have been different early in the second half if Eberechi Eze's curling shot from the edge of the box had been just 15 cm more accurate. Instead, the ball struck the inside of the post, rolled along the goal line, and was cleared.
Minutes later, Man City attacked at the other end, scoring the decisive goal. The play originated from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, then Nico O’Reilly exchanged passes with Jeremy Doku before crossing to Rodri. Arsenal's defense converged on the Man City midfielder, leaving Erling Haaland unmarked when the ball rebounded. The Norwegian striker then finished, making the score 2-1.
The game was not over after that goal, and Arsenal will likely tell themselves the same regarding the title race. Despite the loss, their performance at the Etihad was brighter than previous matches, offering hope. In the 73rd minute, Gabriel Magalhaes' header deflected off a player and hit the post. Then, in stoppage time, following a fierce cross from substitute Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz was unmarked in front of goal, but his header went slightly high.
The 19/4 match at the Etihad was full of drama, with intense individual battles. Notably, Haaland and Gabriel clashed repeatedly, constantly pushing the limits. In the second half, Gabriel pulled Haaland's shirt so hard it tore. In the 84th minute, after a challenge, the two confronted each other, and Gabriel aggressively head-butted his opponent.
Gabriel did not take a run-up, which was part of the reason he only received a yellow card. Another factor keeping him on the field was Haaland not falling. Guardiola on the sideline reacted strongly, believing it should have been a red card for Gabriel. Haaland also received a yellow card, a somewhat "balanced" but controversial decision.
The fiery encounter began with Rayan Cherki putting Man City ahead in the 14th minute with a beautiful goal in a tight space. He dribbled past Gabriel, then through Declan Rice, before calmly finishing to open the scoring.

Arsenal's immediate equalizer was a costly error by Donnarumma. Earlier in the game, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya narrowly avoided losing the ball to Haaland while playing with his feet. In a similar situation, Donnarumma was not so fortunate. Receiving the ball near the goal line on the right side of the goal, his touch was slightly heavy, and Havertz immediately closed in. The successful tackle turned into a shot that flew directly into the net.
Guardiola had anticipated Arteta would adjust his approach, and he did. The Arsenal manager deployed Havertz as a number 9, keeping Viktor Gyokeres on the bench. A pre-match boost was Martin Odegaard's return from injury and inclusion in the starting lineup. This meant Eze played on the left, and Arsenal engaged more openly in open play.
Man City had an early chance in the 4th minute when Cherki's shot deflected off Gabriel and hit the inside of the post. However, the first half hour leaned towards Arsenal. After just 10 minutes, they had regained possession in the opponent's final third as many times as their last two visits to the Etihad combined.
Arsenal applied strong pressure on Donnarumma, with Declan Rice and Havertz alternating to force him into long clearances, allowing Gabriel and William Saliba to challenge Haaland for aerial balls. After 23 minutes, Arsenal had 41 high presses in the final third, compared to only 5 for City. In their equalizer, Havertz initiated the press as soon as Matheus Nunes released the ball.
Man City, needing the win, continued to push forward after the break. Haaland hit the outside of the post from a corner, Semenyo mishandled a one-on-one opportunity with Raya, and Doku also tested the Spanish goalkeeper.
Arsenal responded with intensity, seemingly overcoming their recent attacking struggles. Eze and Odegaard created a great chance for Havertz on the counter-attack, but Donnarumma won the one-on-one battle. Then, Eze turned and shot, only to be denied by the post, before Haaland settled the match.
Mikel Arteta's frustration stemmed from Arsenal not making many mistakes; in fact, they played better than expected. Before the match, "the Gunners" had won only one of their last five games across all competitions. In contrast, Man City was in excellent form, having beaten Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Despite the significant difference in momentum, this remained a balanced match, decided by moments that favored Man City.
