Tottenham continued to be a thorn in Man City's side, securing their third victory in four recent encounters. Two first-half goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha sealed Tottenham's second consecutive league win.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola's squad seemed far from their usual dominant form, a stark contrast to their four consecutive title wins. With minutes left on the clock, many home fans began to leave. At the same time, Tottenham supporters chanted, "It's happened again".

Man City created several opportunities in the first half, including a one-on-one chance for forward Omar Marmoush, which he squandered by shooting directly at the goalkeeper. The home side paid the price seven minutes later when Richarlison, having beaten the offside trap, raced down the right flank before crossing to Johnson for a close-range finish. The linesman initially raised his flag for offside, but VAR confirmed the goal.
Following the goal, Man City appeared to lose their composure, struggling to create further dangerous chances and even encountering difficulties playing out from the back. In first-half stoppage time, 22-year-old goalkeeper James Trafford played a difficult pass to Nico Gonzalez inside the penalty area, which was intercepted by Richarlison. The loose ball fell to Joao Palhinha, who fired home to double Tottenham's lead.
After this second goal, the camera focused on substitute goalkeeper Ederson, who appeared impassive. Midfielder Phil Foden was seen smiling. Ederson had lost his starting position to Trafford amidst rumors of his departure. Foden only entered the match in the 75th minute, replacing Oscar Bobb.

Man City has reportedly reached a personal agreement with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma but are still negotiating a transfer fee with PSG. Trafford's error may accelerate this process.
Manager Pep Guardiola also brought on midfielder Rodri in the 75th minute, despite the player not being fully fit. However, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner couldn't change the game's outcome.
Another Man City star, striker Erling Haaland, had a disappointing performance, completing only 9 passes and registering a single shot that sailed over the bar. He did manage to dispossess Tottenham center-back Micky van de Ven in the penalty area but overhit the subsequent pass to a teammate.
Man City's next match is away against Brighton on 31/8. Tottenham will host Bournemouth one day earlier.
