The cut above Mbappe's right eyebrow resulted from an elbow from Vitor Reis during Real Madrid's draw with Girona in La Liga on 10/4. The collision caused the French forward to bleed profusely on the field and later required three stitches.

While the situation is not overly serious, Mbappe could not participate in the latest training session at the Valdebebas training center. The medical team stated that the rest is primarily to avoid further impact and reduce discomfort in the injured area. According to the plan, he will not need to wear a protective mask but will be fitted with suitable protection, expected to be completed in the coming days.
Following the medical intervention, the forward born in 1998 primarily rested and trained in the gym. He has not yet returned to the field, but Real Madrid's coaching staff is confident Mbappe can start in the away match against Bayern at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League quarterfinals second leg on 15/4.
The play leading to the injury occurred in the 89th minute when Mbappe penetrated the penalty area from the right wing and was elbowed. The referee did not consider the situation serious enough to award a foul, despite the collision causing the Real Madrid forward a deep cut above his eyebrow and heavy bleeding. Mbappe played until the end of the match, but doctors later determined the wound required stitches.
Images of the wound were also posted by Mbappe himself on social media, clearly showing the laceration above his right eyebrow, extending onto his forehead. This controversial incident provoked a strong reaction within Real Madrid. Many believed it deserved a penalty, also questioning the lack of VAR intervention.

One notable detail is that the image of blood flowing on Mbappe's forehead was barely visible in the live television broadcast. According to La Liga organizers, there was no directive to conceal the incident. The league's operating body stated that Vitor Reis's elbow was replayed up to 8 times. However, there was no clear close-up angle showing the wound and the amount of blood. The only camera angle capturing the doctors attending to Mbappe was obscured by the arm of a medical staff member, preventing viewers from clearly seeing the player's face.
Meanwhile, photojournalists present at the stadium captured more detailed moments, thereby revealing the severity of the collision.
This is not the first time Mbappe has had to wear facial protection. At Euro 2024, he wore a mask after breaking his nose in a collision with Kevin Danso during France's group stage match against Austria.
