Matthaus stated in an RTL/ntv interview that Neuer's chances with the Germany squad are "0%". He believes the parties should have resolved issues earlier, but now, German football has lost the opportunity to have its best-ever goalkeeper start at the World Cup.

The strained relationship between Neuer and coach Nagelsmann, according to Matthaus, originated during their time together at Bayern. Matthaus asserts that the breakdown began when Nagelsmann dismissed goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic, a close friend of Neuer.
Matthaus added, "From that point, the situation was beyond repair. Further discussion is unnecessary, as the outcome is clear."
Neuer played for the U19, U20, and U21 teams before receiving his first call-up to the Germany squad for an Asian tour in 5/2009. He was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against Trung Quoc on 29/5 and made his debut playing the full 90 minutes in a 7-2 victory over UAE in Dubai on 2/6.
Since his debut, the 1986-born goalkeeper has played 124 matches, appearing in four World Cups and four Euros. His career highlight was winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He became Germany's captain in 9/2016, following Bastian Schweinsteiger's international retirement, and concluded his national team career after Euro 2024.
Matthaus lauded Neuer's sustained performance at 40. Neuer remains Bayern's top goalkeeper, recently delivering a strong performance in their 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win against Real.
Matthaus advocated for Germany to focus on new goalkeeping options rather than debating Neuer's return. The 65-year-old stated that if Nagelsmann selects Oliver Baumann, Hoffenheim's 35-year-old goalkeeper, the decision warrants full support.
He added, "Nagelsmann's duty is to assemble the best squad, including the goalkeeper. It is unfortunate that Neuer will not be part of it."

Oliver Kahn, another German football legend, criticized coach Nagelsmann's team selection, particularly with the 2026 World Cup approaching. The former goalkeeper argues that Nagelsmann overemphasizes tactical systems and defined roles, neglecting team spirit.
Kahn told Sky, "He builds the team on systems, not spirit. Player selection isn't strictly based on form; under him, suitable players feature, not always the best."
This approach is evident in Deniz Undav's situation. The Stuttgart forward, despite 23 goals and 13 assists, often starts from the bench.
Kahn views this as a symptom of a broader issue, cautioning against drastic overhauls. He stated, "I do not support tearing everything down to start over. A World Cup is decided by team spirit and character, not systems."
With the global football event nearing, German football faces a choice: adhere to a rigid tactical system or prioritize team spirit and cohesion, as Kahn stressed.
