"Eze is a fantastic signing for Arsenal," Merson told Sky Sports on 21/8. "It's a game-changer and a perfect fit. If Arsenal had let Tottenham get him, I'd be questioning the club's strategy, because he’s a quality player."

Over the past 10 days, Tottenham had been in advanced talks with Crystal Palace and close to signing Eze for 70.4 million USD. However, on 20/8, Arsenal unexpectedly swooped in and secured Eze's signature for 80 million USD, plus 10 million USD in add-ons.
According to British newspaper Sportmail, Eze was persuaded to join Arsenal after meeting with Sporting Director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta last month. The Gunners had targeted Eze since the beginning of the summer, but focused on player sales after acquiring Viktor Gyokeres for a total of 86 million USD. Kai Havertz's knee injury, however, forced Arsenal to quickly bolster their attacking options, making Eze their top priority once again.
Merson considers this a pivotal signing that could be crucial in helping Arsenal break down tight defenses, particularly at the Emirates Stadium. "He has that 'X-factor,' that ability to create decisive moments in close games," the former England midfielder commented.
According to Merson, Eze will be particularly useful in home matches where Arsenal's opponents sit deep. "In away games, he might not be the sole answer," he said. "Against Liverpool or Man City, Arsenal might face pressure and have to play slightly differently. But that's why Arsenal needs a deep squad. At home, against weaker teams, when they have 70-80% possession, let Eze showcase his talent because he will create chances and change the game."
Merson, who played for Arsenal from 1985 to 1997, believes Eze could be the deciding factor in helping his former club end their 21-year Premier League title drought. "I think Arsenal will win the league with Eze," the 57-year-old emphasized. "They still have a chance without him because this season is unpredictable, with Liverpool and Man City having performed well in the opening round. But Eze will help them cross the finish line."
In the opening round of this Premier League season, Arsenal defeated Man Utd 1-0 thanks to a Riccardo Calafiori goal from a corner kick. On Monday Night Football, before the Eze deal was finalized, Jaime Carragher wanted the Gunners to strengthen their attack to play more diversely.
"I think Arsenal will be Liverpool's biggest rival," he commented. "It's just one game, but the way they played at Old Trafford was reminiscent of last season: winning through set pieces and solid defense. That’s fine because the objective is to win. But it will be interesting to see in the next few weeks if they expand their style of play and create more opportunities. It will be interesting to see how Arsenal develop from last season."
