Messi clashes with opponent in tunnel

Argentina captain Lionel Messi nearly brawled with Venezuela captain Tomas Rincon in the tunnel during a South American World Cup 2026 qualifier.

Argentina led Venezuela 1-0 at halftime thanks to Messi's opening goal. As the players headed to their locker rooms for the break, cameras caught the 38-year-old superstar turning back toward the opposing team as Rincon and his teammates were also leaving the field. The two captains exchanged words, drawing the attention of other players. Striker Salomon Rondon, standing nearby, quickly intervened.

The circulating video suggests Rincon may have gestured or even shoved Messi regarding an on-field incident, angering the Argentinian star. Messi appeared ready to confront Rincon again, but Rondon and fourth official Jose Cabero intervened to defuse the situation. The tension subsided, and Rincon did not return for the second half, being substituted out. Messi played the entire 90 minutes in his final official match in Argentina.

Following the altercation, Messi spoke with and embraced Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez, his former Inter Miami teammate from the 2023 season. Most of the Argentinian players did not participate in the dispute.

This match held special significance for Messi, as it was his last official game played in Argentina. "There are many emotions because I know this is the last match in Argentina," he said after the game. "I've experienced all sorts of feelings, but it's always a joy to play in front of the home fans."

Coach Lionel Scaloni revealed that Messi should have left the field earlier due to his physical condition, but he respected his player's desire to finish this meaningful match. Messi will not travel with Argentina to Ecuador for their final World Cup 2026 qualifier, opting to spend time with his family.

The 37-year-old Rincon, a defensive midfielder, has frequently faced Messi directly when their teams have played. Known for his strong personality, he currently plays for Santos (Brazil). Rincon and Messi also exchanged words several times after collisions during the first half.
