Messi eager for first encounter with England national team

After advancing to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals with Argentina, forward Lionel Messi expressed his excitement about facing England – the only major opponent he has never met in his career.

England secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Norway in the quarter-finals, while Argentina triumphed 3-1 against Switzerland. The two nations are now set to face each other at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, US, on 16/7 at 2h Hanoi time, vying for a place in the final.

This upcoming match against England marks a significant milestone for Messi, as it will be his first time facing the national team in any capacity, whether official or friendly. This semi-final also represents his third World Cup last-four appearance, following a runner-up finish in 2014 and a championship title in 2022.

"This is a special match", Messi stated after the win against Switzerland. He added, "I have faced many national teams, but never England. They are a great team, a powerhouse, and it's always exciting to play against such opponents, especially in a World Cup semi-final".

On 11/7 at Arrowhead Stadium, Argentina initially gained the lead with a header from Alexis MacAllister, but Dan Ndoye soon leveled the score for Switzerland. A turning point occurred in the 71st minute when Breel Embolo was sent off, giving Argentina a man advantage. Seizing this opportunity, Argentina dominated the remainder of the match, scoring two goals in extra time via Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez to secure a 3-1 win.

"I feel truly happy with this victory. It was a very difficult match", Messi commented. He added, "The key for us was to advance, allowing for some rest days before the next game. This squad is always competitive, never stops pushing, always strives for more, and consistently proves its worth among the world's elite teams".

Messi highlighted his particular admiration for Julian Alvarez's goal: a right-footed curling shot into the far corner that secured a 2-1 lead in extra time. FIFA data indicated the ball reached 86 km/h upon entering the Swiss net. "He scored a beautiful goal, but it's not his first. He has scored many like it", Messi lauded his younger teammate. "His finishing ability is exceptional, demonstrated consistently during his time at Atletico Madrid".

Messi further reflected on Argentina's impressive track record over recent years, which includes winning the 2022 World Cup, the Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Intercontinental Supercup. "It's extraordinary for a team to accomplish what we have", the 39-year-old star remarked. "Winning a World Cup, securing two Copa Americas, and once again reaching the semi-finals as one of the world's top four teams. We must savor this moment, just like our supporters".

Argentina's path to the semi-finals was arduous. Before defeating Switzerland, they narrowly overcame Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time during the round of 16, and staged a remarkable 3-2 comeback against Egypt in the round of 8 after trailing by two goals. Messi acknowledged the squad is currently under pressure following a demanding schedule and must use the upcoming break to regain optimal fitness. "We've played numerous matches, enduring substantial physical strain, and the entire team senses it. Now, rest is crucial, along with optimal preparation to continue our constant pursuit: competition", the Argentina captain stressed.

Following the match, Messi took to Instagram, sharing several photos along with an emotional message: "Once again, we faced intense pressure, but this team never lost faith. We are back among the world's top four teams. Let's go!".
