"I said after the 2022 World Cup that logically, I wouldn't be at the 2026 tournament due to my age," Messi told Ole after scoring twice against Venezuela on 4/9. "I can hardly imagine myself playing at the highest level at 39. But here we are. I'm eager and passionate, but as I've always said, I'm focusing on each day, each match."

Messi is one of the greatest players in history, instrumental in Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph, alongside the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles. At the club level, he has won four Champions Leagues, 10 La Ligas, and two Ligue 1 titles, along with a record eight Ballon d'Ors and six European Golden Shoes.
In recent years, Messi has moved away from top-level European football but continues to play impressively, making significant contributions to Inter Miami in the US. This has led fans to believe he will participate in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, the US, and Mexico from 11/6 to 19/7/2026.
However, the Argentina captain admitted that recent injuries and a demanding schedule have forced him to listen to his body more. "This year I've played many consecutive matches, enduring intense periods," he added. "Now I feel good having played three games in a row, but the important thing is how my body feels daily. I need to be honest with myself."
Messi also confirmed he won't play in the final qualifying match against Ecuador on 9/9. He and his teammates had already secured a direct spot in the World Cup finals as the top team in South America. "When I feel healthy, I enjoy football. But if I'm not well, I feel uncomfortable and would rather not play," Messi stated.
Despite not possessing the same speed as before, the former Barcelona forward remains a threat with his finishing, free-kicks, and playmaking abilities. In the 3-0 win over Venezuela, he scored twice and created four chances for his teammates.
Messi expressed pride in scoring two goals in front of his wife and children in his homeland. He left Argentina at 13 and has primarily lived in Spain, France, and now the US. "Sharing this joy with my family here is special. They've always wanted to experience this, and today it was perfect," he said.
Looking ahead, Messi emphasized that he doesn't want to put pressure on himself or make promises he's unsure about. With only nine months until the 2026 World Cup, it's a long road, especially for a 38-year-old player. "I need to finish the season with Inter Miami, hopefully win the MLS, and then prepare well for the 2026 season," the Argentina captain added. "Then, I'll decide."
