Ochoa has featured in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups, playing in three of those tournaments. A call-up for the next tournament would make him one of a select few players to participate in six World Cups.
Currently, only two legends, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, are also nearing the milestone of six World Cup appearances. Beyond these three, only 5 other players have featured in five World Cups: Antonio Carbajal, Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado (Mexico), Lothar Matthaus (Germany), and Gianluigi Buffon (Italy).

However, Ochoa's inclusion is not guaranteed. The 40-year-old goalkeeper faces competition from three younger players for a roster spot: Tala Rangel (Guadalajara, 26), Carlos Moreno (MX Pachuca, 28), and Carlos Acevedo (Santos Laguna, 29).
Ochoa ranks third for most appearances in Mexico's national team history with 151 caps, behind only Claudio Suarez (176) and Andres Guardado (180). However, he has not played for the national team since 2024.
Ochoa's most memorable World Cup moment was the 0-0 group stage draw against Brazil in 2014. He made a series of excellent saves, denying clear opportunities from Paulinho, Neymar (twice), and Thiago Silva.
Back home, Ochoa is a hero with over 3,1 million Instagram followers. Beyond his talent, the goalkeeper is known for his unusual personality.
In summer 2025, Ochoa was reportedly close to joining Burgos Club in Spain's Second Division. After completing medical tests and nearing a contract agreement, he unexpectedly requested a clause modification before leaving for hot water. Ochoa never returned, and Burgos could not re-establish contact.
Ochoa currently plays for AEL Limassol, which ranks fifth in the Cyprus National Championship.
At the 2026 World Cup, Mexico will play their group stage matches on home soil against South Africa, South Korea, and a playoff qualifier.
