Alcaraz experienced a right wrist issue at the Barcelona Open, where he defeated Otto Virtanen in his opening match before withdrawing. The world number two player concluded his clay-court season early by deciding to skip the Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome, as well as the Grand Slam in Paris, despite being the defending Roland Garros champion. Alcaraz has not yet set a specific timeline for his return.
"Alcaraz is no longer a young player; he knows what to do in situations like this", Nadal told RNE Deportes on 17/5. "Alcaraz is a very complete player who can win on any surface. But in my opinion, where he has the greatest potential to make a difference is on clay."

Nadal understands that missing Roland Garros is a major disappointment for Alcaraz. However, the former world number one emphasized that his younger compatriot is still very young and does not need to take risks. Drawing on his experience of repeatedly pushing his body's limits, Nadal affirmed that Alcaraz's decision to slow down is a wise choice, not a sign of retreat.
"Fortunately, this injury did not become chronic. He made the right decision, especially with a long career ahead of him", Nadal said. "I know that well because I tore a tendon two times, similar to the issue Alcaraz is currently facing. I spoke with him when it happened."
Alcaraz's setback reminded Nadal of the final stages of his own career. At the opening of a new exhibition at the Rafa Nadal Academy, the 39-year-old former player stated that he does not miss tennis, knowing his own capabilities. Still, Nadal admitted that if he had known things would end so quickly, he likely would not have had hip surgery in 2023.
"For the last one and a half years, if I had known what would happen afterward, I would not have done it", Nadal stated. "The doctors gave me confidence that after the surgery, I would have a chance to return and compete normally under suitable conditions, and I did. But the reality did not meet expectations."
Despite being plagued by injuries throughout his career, Nadal still holds 22 Grand Slam titles, including 14 Roland Garros championships. He will retire after competing with the Spanish national team in the Davis Cup finals in 11/2024. Afterward, Roland Garros will host a solemn tribute ceremony for him in 2025. This year, the clay-court Grand Slam begins on 24/5 and concludes on 8/6.
