Neymar scores 17-minute hat-trick

After nearly four years, 33-year-old striker Neymar scored three goals in a single match, leading Santos to a 3-0 victory over hosts Juventude in round 37 of the Brazilian championship.

Neymar's impressive hat-trick, scored in just 17 minutes, marked a significant return to form for the Brazilian star. His goals in the 56th, 65th, and 73rd minutes were crucial in securing Santos's victory and boosting the team's position in the league standings.

This performance was Neymar's first hat-trick since 9/4/2022, when he achieved the feat for PSG in their 6-1 win against Clermont Foot in Ligue 1. The match against Juventude also marked his third consecutive game scoring for Santos, signaling a strong resurgence in his club career.

The scoring spree began in the 56th minute when Neymar threaded a pass to defender Guilherme Augusto, who surged down the left flank. Augusto expertly cut the ball back, allowing the Santos captain to strike a one-touch shot that grazed a home defender's foot before flying into the top corner of the net. Just nine minutes later, Neymar netted his second goal with a powerful left-footed shot that found its way through the goalkeeper's legs from a tight angle.

The former Barca striker completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute, converting a penalty kick to the bottom right corner, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Earlier in the 47th minute, Neymar had missed a clear opportunity, sending a tap-in over the bar.

The decisive 3-0 victory propelled Santos out of the relegation zone, moving them to 14th place out of 20 teams ahead of the final round. Their next challenge will be a home game against third-placed Cruzeiro.

Neymar's recent "resurgence" has ignited calls from Brazilian fans for coach Carlo Ancelotti to include him in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. A survey conducted by Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper revealed that 48% of readers support Neymar's participation in the upcoming World Cup, while 41% oppose the idea. Over 2,000 people aged 16 and above participated in the survey.

Brazil is scheduled to play two friendly matches in 3/2026 before the World Cup. Neymar's last appearance for the national team was more than two years ago, making his potential return a hot topic among football enthusiasts.
