The convoy, consisting of Togg smart cars adorned with Turkish flags, stretched for kilometers. It departed from the Hasan Dogan National Teams Training and Education Center of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) in Riva, accompanying the team to Istanbul Airport.
The 2026 World Cup marks Turkey's return to football's biggest stage after 24 years. Their last appearance was in 2002, where they surprisingly secured third place.
Coach Vincenzo Montella announced the 26-player squad before their departure. The team features European stars such as Altay Bayindir (Man Utd), Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter Milan), Arda Guler (Real Madrid), and Kenan Yildiz (Juventus).
In an interview with FIFA, Montella outlined Turkey's immediate goal: advancing past the group stage. They face Australia, Paraguay, and co-host US. The Italian coach acknowledged the challenge, noting all three opponents have significant experience in major tournaments. However, he expressed confidence in his players' ability to compete if they maintain their recent form. "It's important to dream but keep our feet on the ground", Montella emphasized. The 51-year-old coach hopes this generation can emulate the 2002 team, which was a tournament phenomenon, and write new history at the 2026 World Cup.
