According to English media, Tottenham had been actively negotiating with Crystal Palace for nearly two weeks and were nearing a deal for Eze.
However, Eze's call to Arteta prompted an urgent meeting among Arsenal's leadership, who then decided to snatch Tottenham's target. On 20/8, Arsenal intervened and successfully signed Eze for 80 million USD with an additional 10 million USD in add-ons.

After the 5-0 victory over Leeds in the second round of the English Premier League, Arteta confirmed this information. "That call showed Eze really wanted to come here," he said. "Sometimes it's difficult because players have to make important career decisions. I'm delighted to have Eze on the team. You can see how much this means to Eze and his family. Welcome him to the Arsenal family, I believe together we'll have many great moments".
Eze will wear the number 10 shirt, vacant since Emile Smith Rowe moved to Fulham in 2024. Previously, the number 10 belonged to Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, William Gallas, and the legendary Dennis Bergkamp. Eze wore this number 10 shirt and was introduced to Arsenal fans before the win against Leeds yesterday.
Former midfielder Paul Merson believes that signing Eze could be the turning point that helps Arsenal overcome strong defenses to win the Premier League this season, after three consecutive runner-up finishes.
Arteta shared this view, believing Eze is the "X-factor" - the special element that Arsenal was missing, a player capable of creating decisive moments in close matches.
"Eze has the ability to create magic from various positions," the Spanish coach said. "Eze possesses improvisation, attractive personality, and knows how to turn it into a weapon. He can play centrally, on the left, or on the right and still be very comfortable. When he gets in sync with his teammates, we'll find the most suitable position for him".
Meanwhile, former England player Jamie Redknapp believes Eze's arrival could put pressure on and even take the starting spot of captain Martin Odegaard.
"I want to see Eze play centrally," Redknapp commented on Sky Sports. "That's the position he wants. Odegaard will feel the pressure of competition. Arsenal have many options, but only one Bukayo Saka. His hamstring injury and absence at Anfield next weekend is a big loss. Saka is the team's morale booster, and Eze could be the one to provide a temporary solution".
Eze could make his debut when Arsenal visit Liverpool in the third round of the Premier League on 31/8.
