In mid-3/2025, Gallardo told ESPN F12 that he spoke with Ronaldo through a mutual friend. "I told him the Club World Cup was approaching and a player like him would mark an era for the tournament," Gallardo said. "I asked if he had any plans to participate."
Gallardo wanted to loan Ronaldo from Al Nassr for the Club World Cup. FIFA regulations allow for such loans, but ultimately Ronaldo didn't join any other team. The Argentinian coach said Ronaldo considered the offer but declined, stating, "I have to prepare for the new season".

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup features 32 teams and a substantial $1 billion prize pool. Al Nassr didn't qualify, but Ronaldo received offers from clubs in Morocco, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and even Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also publicly encouraged teams to sign Ronaldo.
During a press conference on 7/6, the day before the UEFA Nations League final, Ronaldo didn't announce his decision regarding the Club World Cup. He revealed he had received offers from Argentina and expressed his desire to visit the country one day. The 40-year-old ultimately decided to stay at Al Nassr, although his contract expires at the end of 6/2025, and an extension hasn't been agreed upon.
The 49-year-old Gallardo, a former attacking midfielder for Argentina, led River Plate to two Copa Libertadores titles. He then coached Al Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League during the 2023-2024 season, the same time Ronaldo captained Al Nassr. After failing to win any titles in Saudi Arabia, Gallardo returned to River Plate.
River Plate leads Group E of the Club World Cup after the first round, following a 3-1 victory against Urawa Red Diamonds. In their next two matches, Gallardo's team will face Monterrey (Mexico) at 8 a.m. on Sunday 22/6, and Inter at 8 a.m. on Thursday 26/6, Hanoi time.
