Ronaldo's shot in the 55th minute struck the arm of Hungarian forward Barnabas Varga, leading to a penalty awarded by referee Erik Lambrechts. The Portuguese captain paused twice during his run-up before sending the ball low to the left corner, putting Portugal up 2-1.
The 40-year-old superstar celebrated with his signature spin jump as Hungarian fans recorded the moment. This was Ronaldo's 39th goal in World Cup qualifiers, equaling the record held by former Guatemala forward Carlos Ruiz. Ronaldo has at least four more matches to break this record.
This also marked Ronaldo's fifth consecutive match scoring for Portugal. He previously found the net in the second leg of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final of the UEFA Nations League, and then scored twice against Armenia in the first round of European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
