Ronaldo's final dance at the World Cup

Playing the entire match and taking two shots on target against Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo, in his forties, concluded his final World Cup game imperfectly.

For those arriving in downtown Dallas, US, via the Dallas Area Rapid Transit subway, announcements indicated increased train services "to accommodate the biggest sporting event on the planet". Without needing to be named, it could only be the round of 16 clash between Portugal and Spain. Many had also anticipated that this could very well be Ronaldo's final journey in a World Cup.

"This will be my last World Cup, but I hope it won't be my last match," Ronaldo stated at the pre-match press conference. At that time, his mood was relaxed and humorous, surrounded by familiar reporters from his Real Madrid days.

However, in his final performance, Ronaldo showed only faint remnants of the exceptional superstar he once was. Gone was the blistering pace of his youth, and the technical wing play that once captivated fans during his time at the "Theater of Dreams" Old Trafford. His presence on the Dallas pitch was limited to link-up play, short bursts of movement within a quickly stifled pressing structure, and desperate attempts to capitalize on rare opportunities.

The superstar, born in 1985, left the field in tears, flanked by two camera lenses and followed by a silent group of teammates. In the mixed zone afterward, Ronaldo confirmed once more that this was his last World Cup. He departed with a sense of peace, wanting to dedicate time to his family, knowing he had given his all for the Portuguese national colors.

On 15/6/2018, in Sochi, Russia, during Portugal's opening World Cup match, Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, single-handedly carrying the "European Selecao" against Spain. Eight years later, on Texan soil, the script was different. The captain touched the ball only 19 times, with nearly half of those touches occurring in the second half compared to the first.

Ronaldo completed 10 of 12 passes, an 83% success rate. He passed most frequently to Joao Felix, Renato Veiga, and Pedro Neto, each receiving two passes. Conversely, Neto was his most frequent passer, with four deliveries. On the pass network map, his connection appeared as a thin, solitary line.

During the 90 minutes on the field, Ronaldo actively requested the ball from his teammates 19 times, but they only passed to him three times—the team's lowest ratio, only surpassing Borja Iglesias, who entered the game in the 90+7th minute for Spain.

Throughout the match, Ronaldo took three shots, two of which tested Unai Simon's goal. Ronaldo's three shots had expected goal values of 0,03, 0,17, and 0,09 respectively, indicating a very low probability of scoring.

His first attempt came quite early. In the 12th minute, receiving a pass down the right flank from Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo faced Aymeric Laporte. He took one touch, feinted to deceive his opponent, then unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from a tight angle directly at the Spanish goalkeeper.

His second opportunity arose in the 37th minute. Neto's curling cross towards the far post was met by an effort from Felix. His Al-Nassr teammate headed the ball back to the captain. The ball deflected off Simon's arm, altering its trajectory beyond Ronaldo's anticipated position, but he still stretched to reach it, attempting an overhead kick while marked by Pau Cubarsi. The ball went towards the goal, but Simon reacted quickly to gather it.

The 59th minute marked his final significant moment. Again, Felix delivered a cross towards the far post, and Ronaldo ran into the space between Spain's center-back and left-back. The ball was slightly overhit, traveling deep, and he could only attempt a soft shot with the inside of his right foot from an even tighter angle than his first chance. It was still a shot, but it missed the target.

Having scored a brace against Uzbekistan in the group stage with his classic off-the-ball movement into opponents' blind spots, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored one goal in that match with a skillful curling shot. However, against a suffocating Spanish defensive block and their superior ball possession, the performances of Ronaldo and the Portuguese team faded over time.

From aggressively man-marking opponents combined with zonal defense, Portugal was gradually pushed back, and in the final minutes, their positioning was exploited by this very approach. They collapsed before they could even consider extra time.

At 41, it was unreasonable to expect Ronaldo to relentlessly charge at Spanish center-backs or goalkeepers for a high press. Moreover, that system was never implemented by coach Roberto Martinez. All CR7 could do was move to block passing lanes, attempting to cut off opponents' options. He did this a total of 13 times on the field, classified as indirect pressing by FIFA. The only direct press was one, reminiscent of Ousmane Dembele's fierce-eyed efforts at PSG.

Ronaldo covered the sixth-highest total distance on the field for Portugal, at 9,059 meters, behind Joao Neves, Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Vitinha, and Veiga. This was also his highest figure across five matches at the 2026 World Cup.

In Portugal's final, desperate attack, the ball found Neves before drifting past Ronaldo. That was also the last time the second-oldest player to score in World Cup history—having last scored against Croatia in the round of 16 at 41 years and 147 days old—came close to a goal. And when the final whistle blew, Ronaldo shook hands with Rodri before standing silently on the field for a long time, tears welling as he realized he had just taken his final bitter sip at his sixth World Cup.
