In a commentary for the English newspaper The Sun, Deeney suggested that while coach Arne Slot might bear some responsibility for Liverpool’s struggles this season, the larger issue lies with the conduct of some key players, particularly Mohamed Salah, who announced his departure at the end of the season.

Deeney referred to Salah as a "drama queen", describing him as one of the most controversial players he has witnessed regarding on-field attitude and reactions when the team does not achieve desired results. The former English striker emphasized that legendary status is not solely about talent, but also about leadership and consistency in all circumstances.
Deeney drew a comparison between Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk, whom he believes is always ready to face the media and take responsibility when the team performs poorly. In contrast, he observed that Salah often tends to act more individually in high-pressure situations.
The former player, born in 1988, recalled several notable moments in Salah’s career at Liverpool, such as tensions with coach Jurgen Klopp when he was benched, or his public complaints about not being offered a contract extension in late december 2024. He also mentioned an interview in late 2025, when Salah criticized Slot and accused Liverpool of breaking promises.
Deeney believes such actions can affect the dressing room, while also adding pressure on Slot, the coach who took over the team less than two seasons ago and is currently dealing with numerous personnel issues and injuries.
According to Deeney, while players like Van Dijk frequently speak out and accept responsibility, attacking stars such as Salah rarely demonstrate this role when the team faces difficulties. Moreover, the 37-year-old former striker views Liverpool's reliance on substitutions and the individual performance of some key players as a potential source of internal instability, impacting overall team spirit.
Deeney suggested that Slot should be evaluated more fairly in the next season, once he is no longer distracted by non-football issues. He also argued that Liverpool should not rush to find solutions by replacing coaches with former club icons, as that does not guarantee success.
| Deeney began his professional career at Chelmsley Town before moving to Walsall and had a loan spell at Halesowen Town. In 2010, he joined Watford and became captain, playing a significant role in helping the club achieve promotion to the Premier League in the 2014-2015 season. After over 400 matches and 11 years with the club, Deeney left Watford in 2021, subsequently playing for Birmingham City. In 2023, he moved to Forest Green Rovers as a player-coach and was later appointed head coach, but was dismissed in early 2024. Deeney currently works as a football pundit for CBS Sports, appearing on the Morning Footy program. |
