Lionel Messi remains uncertain about his participation in the World Cup this coming June. The forward, soon to be 39, reportedly questions his motivation and physical fitness to help Argentina defend their championship. He also expressed reluctance to occupy a spot that could go to younger, more eager, and potentially more impactful players.
Despite this, Scaloni backs Messi's potential involvement. When questioned about the five-time World Cup participant's chances of playing, the Argentina coach stated, "The important thing is for him to come and enjoy himself, if he ultimately decides to. When you stop playing football, all tournaments, especially the World Cup, become unforgettable moments. I once said that Messi didn't need to win the World Cup, and now that he has, he certainly doesn't need to win it again. Everyone, not just Argentinians, wants to watch him play. He just needs to come and enjoy."

Scaloni also revealed that the majority of the 26-player squad for the 2026 World Cup is already determined. The remaining selections will depend on player performances leading up to mid-June and other specific criteria.
Argentina recently delivered a disappointing performance, securing a narrow 2-1 friendly victory against Mauritania, ranked 115th by FIFA, on 27/3. Scaloni conceded that his players performed poorly, viewing the match as a "warning sign." However, he expressed satisfaction with the team's attitude. "They realized they didn't play well, and that's a good sign," Scaloni noted. "When you don't play well, it's important to recognize and correct it."
Argentina is scheduled for another friendly against Zambia on 31/3. Scaloni confirmed that Messi will start this match, having only come on in the second half against Mauritania. The coach also plans to continue evaluating young talents such as Nico Paz and Franco Mastantuono.
The team has two additional friendly matches scheduled against Australia and Serbia in early June. Following these, the reigning World Cup champions will commence their title defense in Group J, facing Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
Historically, only two nations have successfully defended the World Cup title: Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962. Argentina aims to become the third, should they emerge victorious in 2026. Messi and his teammates secured their 2022 World Cup victory against France via a penalty shootout.
