Serena Williams loses 14 kg with weight-loss medication

43-year-old tennis legend Serena Williams reveals she lost 14 kg in a year thanks to a weight-loss drug.

In recent weeks, Serena has surprised fans by posting pictures of her toned physique while training and on vacation. Her rapid transformation worried some, who felt she looked too thin compared to her playing days. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion addressed the varied reactions.

Serena explained she used a GLP-1 weight-loss drug, which helps control blood sugar and reduce appetite. This type of drug, currently produced by many brands, is the subject of much debate worldwide. "I tried everything, training hard and eating healthily, but my weight wouldn't budge," Serena told People magazine. "That had never happened in my career."

After giving birth to her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017 and her second, Adira River, in August 2023, Serena struggled with her weight. She admitted to short-term weight loss, but it plateaued despite her athletic lifestyle. She then started using a GLP-1 product recommended by a healthcare company associated with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

According to Vogue magazine, Serena lost a total of 14 kg in the past year. The former American tennis player says she feels lighter, experiences less pain in her knees and other areas, and her mental state has improved. "I feel relief both physically and mentally. The medication doesn't replace training, but it makes what I'm doing more effective," she added.

However, Serena acknowledged the stigma surrounding weight-loss drugs. "I've never felt pressure to maintain a certain image," the four-time Olympic gold medalist said. "I've always been confident at any size, whether thin or not. But clearly, my body wasn't happy with my previous weight because it caused pain."

Serena's transformation continues to spark debate on social media. Many praise her new slim and attractive physique, while others believe she looks drastically different from her prime.

"She’s too thin…why?", one Instagram user questioned.

Another responded: "They don't know Serena was even slimmer between 1998 and 2007."

Serena Williams retired after the 2022 US Open, concluding her career with a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era. Beyond tennis, she is a businesswoman, philanthropist, and fashion icon. Despite reaching a healthy weight, she has no plans to return to competitive tennis like her sister, Venus Williams.
