Isak missed Newcastle's opening 0-0 draw at Aston Villa and is likely to be absent again when they host Liverpool at St. James' Park in the second round of the Premier League today. The Swedish striker publicly criticized Newcastle for broken promises regarding a potential transfer, stating that a departure would be the best outcome for everyone.
With Isak's future uncertain, Newcastle played without a recognized striker against Aston Villa. Manager Eddie Howe experimented with Anthony Gordon up front, flanked by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga.

However, Slot expressed little sympathy for Howe, citing Newcastle's remaining attacking options. "I've always liked Howe. He's a polite and decent man. I've exchanged messages with him, as I consider him a very honest colleague," the Dutch manager said. "But I don't need to feel sorry for a manager who still has players like Gordon, Murphy, Elanga, and Barnes at his disposal. With a squad like that, there's no need for tears or complaints."
Slot also praised Howe's managerial abilities. "I wouldn't be surprised if Howe manages the England national team one day. He's a good person and a skilled manager," Slot stated.
Slot revealed that Howe is the only Premier League manager he has messaged, following the Carabao Cup final in March where Isak scored to help Newcastle win their first domestic trophy in 70 years. "They deserved to win that match. I didn't say anything else. If we meet again, I'll behave the same way, and I believe Howe will too," the Liverpool manager disclosed.
Slot believes his personal relationship with Howe remains unaffected, despite potential tensions between the clubs. Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes, who directly submitted the offer for Isak, previously worked with Howe at Bournemouth. Howe also has a long-standing acquaintance with Michael Edwards, CEO of Fenway Sports Group, dating back to their time together at Portsmouth in the early 2000s.
Despite spending over 400 million USD this summer, Liverpool is still targeting Isak to bolster their attack. Liverpool submitted a 160 million USD bid, which Newcastle rejected. According to British media, a record-breaking 150 million GBP (approximately 203 million USD) offer could persuade Newcastle to reconsider.
