Sons of football legends who couldn't fill their fathers' boots

Cristian Totti, Brooklyn Beckham, Isaac Drogba, and Enzo Zidane all struggled to escape their famous fathers' shadows and ended their top-flight football careers prematurely.

Cristian Totti, son of Italian football legend Francesco Totti, once carried high expectations at the AS Roma academy. Playing as a forward, Cristian possessed a relatively modern playing style and spent time with the youth teams of Roma, Frosinone, and Rayo Vallecano. He later moved to lower-division clubs like Avezzano and Olbia in Serie D (Italy's fourth division).

At 19, Cristian unexpectedly decided to end his professional football career. According to Italian and Spanish media, the main reason was his inability to cope with comparisons to his illustrious father and the pressure from social media. Francesco Totti reportedly respected his son's decision and supported him in finding his own path in life.

Cristian is said to be currently assisting with coaching and youth training at the Totti Soccer School, a community football training facility founded by his family.

Isaac Drogba, son of Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba, trained at the Chelsea academy and later joined the youth team of Guingamp (France), mirroring his famous father's early career path. In 2/2021, he signed with Folgore Caratese in Serie D, hoping to help the team reach Serie C.

However, Isaac's career failed to make a significant mark. In 2022, at 21, he left professional football and has since virtually disappeared from the European football scene. Although he hasn't officially announced his retirement, his prolonged absence from any club is widely seen as a quiet end to his career.

Brooklyn Beckham, the eldest son of David Beckham, once dreamed of following in his famous father's football footsteps. He joined the Arsenal academy and played for the club's U16 team. However, in 2015, at 16, Brooklyn's contract wasn't renewed after he failed to meet professional expectations.

Following this setback, Brooklyn decided to leave football to pursue his passions for photography and fashion. He worked as a photography assistant in New York, published a personal photo book, and regularly appears in campaigns for major brands. Despite his lack of football success, Brooklyn remains connected to sports through media activities and events organized by the Beckham family.

Romeo, David Beckham's second son, had a longer football journey than his older brother, Brooklyn. After a brief stint at the Arsenal academy in his youth, Romeo returned to the pitch in 2021, joining Inter Miami II, the US team co-owned by his father. He played 26 matches, scored two goals, and was loaned to Brentford B (England) in 2023.

However, in 6/2024, at 21, Romeo decided not to renew his contract with Brentford B and officially withdrew from professional football.

According to British and Spanish media, Romeo shifted to the fashion industry, where he quickly found success as a model and brand ambassador for major labels like Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent, and Puma. He has also appeared at major fashion weeks in Paris and Milan.

Enzo Zidane, the eldest son of legend Zinedine Zidane, entered the Real Madrid academy with high expectations and captained the youth team. He debuted for Real Madrid's first team in 2016, even scoring in his first appearance in the Copa del Rey. However, this marked the peak of Enzo's career.

After leaving Real Madrid, Enzo played for several lower-division clubs across Europe, including Alaves (La Liga), Lausanne (Switzerland), Aves (Portugal), Rodez, and Fuenlabrada (France). Despite periods of decent performance, he never escaped his father's imposing shadow.

In 9/2024, at 29, Enzo announced his retirement after almost a year without playing professionally. In his career, he played a total of 203 matches, scoring 13 goals and providing 24 assists. After leaving the pitch, Enzo is dedicating his time to family and business ventures, while staying involved with football through charity work and community football events.

Joshua Seixas Arantes do Nascimento, born in 1996, is the son of the legendary Pele. He was expected to follow in his father's footsteps, starting his training at Santos at 10, then moving to the US at 12. There, Joshua joined the Florida Rush academy before returning to Santos in 2013 to play for the U20 team.

However, injuries significantly impacted his football career. In 2015, Joshua returned to the US to study at the University of Tampa. Over four years (2015–2018), he played only one game for the university team, the Tampa Spartans, before quitting professional football at 22.

After graduating with a degree in Exercise Science and Sport Physiology, Joshua transitioned to fitness coaching and youth training. He interned at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgium), served as the North American representative for Santos, and currently works at the Soccer Institute of Montverde Academy (Florida, US).
