Thuy Linh advances to round of 16 at world badminton championships

Vietnam's top badminton player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, defeated Kirsty Gilmour 21-17, 23-21 in the women's singles second round of the 2025 World Badminton Championships.

Thuy Linh avenged a previous loss to Gilmour, having been defeated by the Scottish player in the round of 32 at the 2024 Indonesia Open. In the match on the evening of 27/8, the Vietnamese player performed better at crucial moments. For instance, in the first game, when Gilmour led 13-12, Thuy Linh scored five consecutive points to take a 17-13 lead, eventually winning 21-17.

In the second game, Thuy Linh at one point led 20-19 but couldn't close out the match. Her 31-year-old opponent then took a 21-20 lead. The 28-year-old Thuy Linh then scored three consecutive points to win 23-21. Overall, Thuy Linh won 44 of 82 points, a 54% rate.
