U22 Laos captain breaks leg and receives red card at SEA Games

Phetdavanh Somsanid suffered a broken leg after an illegal tackle and was indirectly shown a red card during Laos' 1-4 loss to Malaysia in the second match of Group B at the 33rd SEA Games on the evening of 6/12.

In the 85th minute, with Laos trailing 1-3, Rahman Daud led a quick counter-attack. Phetdavanh rushed to intercept but missed the ball with his tackle, resulting in a second yellow card, which meant an indirect red card.

Referee Payam Heidari issued the card, but Phetdavanh remained on his side, clutching his leg and appearing to be in great pain. Lao team doctors entered the field to examine him. Afterward, they signaled for assistance from the organizing committee's medical staff.

The defender, born in 2001, was diagnosed with a broken right leg, likely involving both the tibia and fibula. After receiving first aid, he was placed on a stretcher with his right leg tightly bandaged, before being transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Phetdavanh pulled his jersey over his face. Meanwhile, his teammates clutched their heads, visibly stunned by their captain's severe injury.

Playing shorthanded, Laos had no chance of turning the tide against Malaysia. In the first minute of second-half stoppage time, the team conceded another goal after a counter-attack, losing the match 1-4.

Earlier, coach Ha Hyeok-jun's squad had a dream start when Xaysombath opened the scoring in the 4th minute. However, Xaysombath himself made a mistake that led to the equalizer. Within three minutes, from the 61st to the 63rd, errors by goalkeeper Lokphathip and defensive marking failures resulted in the team quickly conceding two more goals.

Laos became the first team to be eliminated from the men's football event at the 33rd SEA Games.
