Grasso immediately followed up, continuing her attack and transitioning into a chokehold. The situation lasted only a fleeting moment before the referee intervened, but it was enough to create striking visuals. Barber reportedly lost consciousness before hitting the canvas and remained in the chokehold for a short time afterward.
The referee quickly stopped the match, ending the contest after recognizing Barber's inability to continue. In the moments that followed, she exhibited a confused reaction, even attempting to cling to the referee's leg as if seeking help. The 27-year-old fighter then lay supine in the center of the octagon, arms outstretched, eyes open but showing no clear response, causing considerable concern among spectators.
The medical team immediately intervened. After a few minutes of care, Barber gradually regained consciousness. Notably, she managed to stand up and exit the octagon without assistance. She even returned to the fighting area when the results were announced, as Grasso was named the winner.
On social media after the fight, Barber admitted she remembered little about the sequence leading to her defeat. "All I know is every time I go on social media, I look like I'm dead, and that's not pleasant," she wrote.
Videos capturing the knockout quickly garnered tens of millions of views, prompting the American fighter to limit her online presence initially.
Despite the incident, Barber confirmed her health condition was stable. She extended her gratitude to UFC and her opponent for the opportunity to compete, acknowledging Grasso's excellent performance. "I want to come back and win, but it wasn't a good night. I was outsmarted, and she deserved it," Barber stated.
Despite the severe nature of the defeat, Barber has no intention of stopping. The American fighter affirmed she would rest to recover before returning to training and competition. "I am very fortunate to live what I do," she added. "Though difficult, it was a memorable moment in my career."
From another perspective, UFC President Dana White highly praised Grasso's finish. He described the knockout as one of the most impressive he had ever witnessed, not just this year but across all combat sports.
