Usyk requests extension for heavyweight title defense

Undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has requested an extension for negotiations regarding his mandatory title defense against Joseph Parker due to injury.

On 27/7, the WBO (World Boxing Organization) ordered Usyk to defend his title against the organization's interim champion, Joseph Parker. Both parties were given 30 days to agree on terms.

If the two sides cannot reach an agreement on the financial terms for the mandatory fight, the WBO will initiate a purse bid. In this process, promoters will compete by offering the highest amount of money for the right to organize the fight.

The fight purse will be divided according to the WBO's regulations, typically 75% for the champion and 25% for the challenger. This format ensures the fight takes place even if the two boxers or their teams cannot reach a mutual agreement.

However, promoter Frank Warren said Usyk sent a letter requesting an extension before being obligated to fulfill any duties related to the fight.

"He sent a letter yesterday asking for more time due to injury before being compelled to do anything," Warren told Sky Sports on 14/8. "Whatever happens, Parker will fight as champion if Usyk relinquishes the title, or will directly challenge Usyk for the belt."

The WBO is expected to release an official statement regarding this request in the coming days.

If Usyk relinquishes his title, Parker will be promoted to the official WBO champion. In that case, the fight between Moses Itauma and Dillian Whyte in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 16/8 becomes more significant, as the winner will have the opportunity to challenge Parker for the title.

In February, Parker missed the opportunity to challenge for the IBF title when Daniel Dubois withdrew due to illness. He then had to step aside to allow Usyk to fight Dubois in a unification bout for all 4 heavyweight titles at Wembley. Usyk won by knockout in the fifth round, becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time, holding the WBA, IBF, WBC, and WBO belts.

Usyk boasts a perfect professional record of 20 wins, including 14 knockouts, and is considered one of the best heavyweight boxers in history.

Parker has a record of 30 wins and 3 losses and was the WBO heavyweight champion from 2016 to 2018. The 33-year-old New Zealander is known for his aggressive style, powerful punches, and stamina, making him a formidable heavyweight contender.
