Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's captain, voiced his concern over the team's defensive frailties and a noticeable lack of confidence after their 0-3 defeat to Nottingham Forest. Van Dijk told Sky Sports after the Anfield defeat, "We concede too easily. For the first 30 minutes, we played well and created chances. However, they scored from another set-piece, which led to the entire team becoming rushed, losing challenges and second balls." The Dutch center-back stated that Liverpool is not afraid of defending set-pieces. However, a lack of composure when trailing exacerbates the situation. He added, "You can feel the eagerness when we try to equalize immediately. That's a natural reaction for a team experiencing a difficult period."

The match at Anfield on 22/11 saw Liverpool start strongly, yet they conceded the opening goal from Murillo's first significant attack in the 33rd minute. In the second half, as Liverpool pushed forward, their defense left numerous gaps. Nottingham exploited these, scoring two additional goals through Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White.
This season marks a historic low for Liverpool, who have now lost 6 of their first 12 English Premier League matches. This is only the second time in the club's history, after the 2014-2015 season. They are also the 4th reigning champion to suffer six or more defeats in the opening 12 rounds, joining Blackburn (1995-1996), Chelsea (2015-2016), and Leicester (2016-2017).
Amidst mounting criticism, Van Dijk staunchly defended coach Arne Slot, emphasizing that accountability lies with the entire team. He stated, "Football is a team sport. Not just the starting players, but everyone around us needs to improve. Everyone must look at themselves." The 34-year-old center-back admitted Liverpool delivered a poor performance, particularly by conceding two easy goals after halftime. Nevertheless, the Liverpool captain asserted, "I am not giving up, and neither should anyone else. We will recover, even if it won't happen overnight."

Acknowledging fan frustration, Van Dijk expressed understanding for those who left Anfield early, yet called for continued support during this challenging period. The 34-year-old defender stated, "I cannot dictate what the fans do. If they leave early, I completely understand their frustration. However, I know our supporters have been with us through every up and down for many years, and that is the spirit of Liverpool. I believe they will always stand by the team, regardless of the circumstances. And when we navigate this period, which I am certain we will, they will be there with us."
Looking ahead, Liverpool is set to play at home against PSV in matchday five of the Champions League on 26/11.
