However, under the pressure of over 15,000 home spectators at Indonesia Arena, many Vietnamese players underperformed. Indonesia dominated from the outset, opening the scoring in the 4th minute through Bryan Ick. In the 11th minute, Indonesia doubled their lead with a shot from Ardiansyah Nur following a quick counter-attack.
Vietnam's attempts to narrow the deficit in the remainder of the first half were unsuccessful, as they encountered Indonesia's disciplined defense.
The archipelago nation's team is currently led by coach Hector Souto, who previously worked in Vietnam for over 7 years. He directly trained many current key players for the Vietnamese team, such as Thinh Phat and Manh Dung.
In the second half, with nothing left to lose, Vietnam launched aggressive attacks. Hope emerged in the 25th minute when Da Hai scored with a low shot, reducing the score to 1-2. However, a defensive error led to Vietnam conceding a third goal just one minute later, from a shot by Reza.
In the final minutes, Vietnam switched to a power-play strategy and scored their second goal in the 36th minute. Da Hai again found the net with a shot from a tight angle that hit the top corner of Indonesia's goal. However, that was the extent of their comeback efforts.
