Vietnam women - Myanmar: no turning back at SEA Games 33

Huynh Nhu and her teammates will enter today's final group B match against Myanmar with a single goal: victory, to avoid early elimination at SEA Games 33.

After two matches, Myanmar leads the group with 6 points and a +4 goal difference. Vietnam has 3 points and a +6 goal difference, while the Philippines also has 3 points with a 0 goal difference. This situation means Vietnam must secure a victory, while Myanmar only needs a draw to finish first in the group. In the other fixture, the Philippines is highly favored to claim three points against a weaker Malaysia.

Myanmar has demonstrated unpredictability in their two previous matches, relying on a dynamic and enthusiastic young squad supported by experienced veterans. Their strategy revolves around a defensive-counterattacking style, characterized by quick pressing and relentless competition, backed by strong physical stamina. This approach led to a significant upset, a 2-1 victory over the Philippines, and a dominant 3-0 win against Malaysia.

A primary threat from Myanmar is 30-year-old forward Win Theingi Tun, a powerful and versatile scorer adept at seizing opportunities. "We must contain this target", stated midfielder Thai Thi Thao. "We learned a profound lesson after our loss to the Philippines and have put aside the harshness of football to focus on this match".

Despite facing a must-win scenario, the Vietnamese women remain confident, supported by their historical record. In 27 encounters between the two nations, Vietnam has secured 20 victories, suffered only three losses, and drawn four matches. Their most recent successes against Myanmar were at SEA Games 32, where Vietnam won 3-1 in the group stage and 2-0 in the final to claim the gold medal.

According to goalkeeper Kim Thanh, if one were to cite a strong competitive dynamic in football, it would be between Vietnam and the Philippines, and Myanmar and Vietnam. Consequently, she and her teammates feel confident and ready to defeat the group leaders to secure a semifinal berth. "The entire team will try our best to achieve that", Kim Thanh told VnExpress.

After playing two matches at 18h30, Vietnam will compete today at 16h. Yesterday, the team conducted an early training session to adapt to the weather and lighting conditions. Center-back Kim Yen has also recovered in time to return, ensuring personnel is no longer a major concern.

In recent days, coach Mai Duc Chung and his assistants have closely observed Myanmar's matches and meticulously reviewed footage. He noted that the opponent consistently initiates matches quickly, applies early pressure, and effectively exploits opportunities to gain an advantage. "That, conversely, is Vietnam's weakness", he stressed. "Therefore, players need to capitalize on opportunities, avoid rushing, and strictly adhere to the tactics. If they can execute this, victory is certainly within reach".

Anticipated Lineup:

Vietnam: Kim Thanh, Kim Yen, Diem My, Truc Huong, Hai Linh, Thai Thi Thao, Tran Thi Duyen, Thanh Nha, Van Su, Bich Thuy, Hai Yen.

Myanmar: Myo Mya Mya Nyein, May Thet Mon Myint, Phyu Phwe, Zune Yu Ya Oo, Phyu Phyu Win, Naw Htet Htet Wai, San Thaw Thaw, Khin Mo Mo Tun, Yuper Khin, Lin Lae Oo, Win Theingi Tun.
