For the first time, AIMS expert Kim Vivian was directly authorized to visit Hai Phong to measure the four distances of the VnExpress Marathon. Inviting an international expert to conduct the AIMS-standard measurement process demonstrates an upgrade in professional quality and a commitment to ensuring the absolute accuracy of the course.

Last october, Vivian carried out measurements according to standard procedures, recording all data for the distances and assessing the course's compliance with standards. The 2025 season's course includes some adjustments from the previous year to optimize accuracy. After completing the documentation and review, AIMS issued certification for all four distances.
"The VM Hai Phong course is considered optimal for achieving personal bests", an organizer's representative shared. "Therefore, the organizers want to ensure that each athlete's performance is recorded on an internationally certified racecourse. With AIMS certification, runners' results are eligible for registration in major marathon events worldwide."
AIMS is a reputable organization specializing in measuring and certifying distances for long-distance races globally. They are often responsible for course lengths at the Olympic Games and events within the World Marathon Majors series.

AIMS uses a mechanical Jones Counter attached to a bicycle to measure distances, a method recognized by World Athletics as more accurate than GPS or roller devices. Before measuring, the expert calibrates the equipment on a standard steel tape section measuring 300-400 meters and calculates the correction factor based on ambient temperature.
The measurement process is typically conducted at night. An expert may cycle over 80 km to complete the measurement for the four distances. The principle is to measure the shortest possible route. Turnaround points and important markers are referenced against multiple fixed objects for later verification. Final results are only confirmed when they align with the standard 42,195 km for a marathon and 21,097 km for a half marathon, after applying AIMS's safety factor.
For races like VM Hai Phong, where many athletes aim for personal bests, the AIMS expert's measurement and verification of the course provide runners with confidence in the accuracy of the distance during competition.
Reports from clubs and training groups nationwide indicate that nearly 300 runners aim to achieve sub-three-hour times this season, making Hai Phong a gathering point for the long-distance running community later this year.
The organizers increased the number of water stations to 22, two more than last year. Station density is enhanced in the latter half of the 42 km course, near Do Son, to help runners maintain stamina. Athletes will be divided into starting groups to avoid congestion.
Currently, VnExpress Marathon Hai Phong is entering the preparation phase for supplies and logistics to welcome 14,000 athletes to the Port City on 21/12. All information about the race will be updated on the event's fanpage and website in the coming time.
