What are the scenarios for the Vietnam women's team to advance at SEA Games 33?

The 0-1 loss to the Philippines on matchday two of Group B is not a disaster, but it significantly impacts Vietnam's chances of defending their title in women's football at SEA Games 33.

Vietnam currently stands second in Group B with 3 points, level with the Philippines but with a superior goal difference (+6 compared to 0). Meanwhile, Myanmar leads the group with 6 points and a goal difference of +4. Malaysia is at the bottom without any points and a goal difference of -10, making them virtually eliminated from contention.

The final matchday will take place simultaneously on 11/12, with Vietnam facing Myanmar and the Philippines playing Malaysia.

The tie-breaking criteria at SEA Games 33 are, in order: points, overall group goal difference, and overall group goals scored. If two or more teams remain tied after these criteria, head-to-head goal difference will be considered. Finally, fair-play points (number of cards) and drawing lots will be used. If the two relevant teams meet in the final match, a penalty shootout will decide their ranking.

A victory for Vietnam against Myanmar guarantees their advancement due to a superior goal difference. This is a mandatory goal. If Vietnam draws or loses, they must hope that the Philippines achieves a similar result against Malaysia. However, considering the skill levels, Malaysia's chances of securing points against the Philippines are very slim.

Group B
Rank Team Played Won Drawn Lost Goals For Goals Against Goal Difference Points
1 Myanmar 2 2 0 0 5 1 +4 6
2 Vietnam 2 1 0 1 7 1 +6 3
3 Philippines 2 1 0 1 2 2 0 3
4 Malaysia 2 0 0 2 0 10 -10 0

In Group A, Thailand is highly likely to top the group and will face the second-place team from Group B in the semifinals. For Vietnam to win Group B, they must defeat Myanmar and simultaneously hope that the Philippines does not secure an overwhelming victory against Malaysia, which would allow them to overtake Vietnam on goal difference.

This is not the first time Coach Mai Duc Chung's team has faced difficulties at the SEA Games. At the previous Games in Cambodia, Vietnam also lost 1-2 to the Philippines in the final group match but still advanced to the semifinals. At that time, Vietnam, Myanmar, and the Philippines all had 6 points, with goal differences of +4, +3, and +1 respectively.

The women's football semifinals at SEA Games 33 will be held on 14/12. Three days later, the final and bronze medal match will take place. All matches are scheduled to be played in Chonburi.

Vietnam is the defending champion, having won four consecutive gold medals since the 2017 Games in Malaysia. Their three direct competitors are Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
