World Cup player Jayden Adams dies at 25

South African national team midfielder Jayden Adams, who recently played in the 2026 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 25, shocking the nation's football community.

South African media outlets simultaneously reported the news on 11/7. Adams' representative and guardian confirmed the tragic news, but the cause of death has not yet been announced.

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club has not yet issued an official statement. When contacted by the media, the club requested respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time.

Adams had just returned from the 2026 World Cup, where he represented the South African national team. The 25-year-old midfielder started all three group stage matches, helping the team advance beyond the group stage before being eliminated in the round of 16 after a 0-1 loss to Canada. He was not used in that match.

Following the tournament, Adams and seven other Sundowns players were granted an additional two weeks of rest before rejoining the team for pre-season preparations. He was scheduled to travel to Austria next week for a training camp under coach Miguel Cardoso.

Brendine Johnson, Adams' advisor, stated that the family is still reeling from the shock and hopes for privacy.

"It is all still too sudden. The family does not wish to speak to anyone at this time. Everyone is devastated. I just spoke with him on thursday. He was very optimistic about returning after the World Cup, ready for new challenges after having just won the African Champions League. He always loved spending time at home with his family", Johnson said.

He added: "No one expected this to happen. I am currently at a loss for words, I only hope everyone respects the family's privacy".

Adams emerged from the Stellenbosch academy and signed his first professional contract in 2020. He quickly became a key player for the team, making 139 appearances – the second highest in the club's history – before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in 1/2025.

After joining Sundowns, he continued his success, winning the South African championship (Betway Premiership) and the African Champions League in less than two years.

At the national team level, Adams earned nine caps for South Africa. He was also part of the squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2024 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, before making his World Cup debut this summer.

The 2026 World Cup was also a poignant tournament for Adams as he played through personal tragedy. His grandmother passed away one day before the group stage match against the Czech Republic. At that time, the South African Football Association (SAFA) extended its condolences to the family, but Adams still chose to play.

Adams' sudden passing has plunged South African football into mourning. Many condolences from players, coaches, and fans are expected to continue pouring in for the late midfielder's family in the coming days.
