Lamine Yamal has voiced his enthusiasm for a potential clash with Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2026 World Cup round of 16. Spain's 3-0 win over Austria yesterday set up a highly anticipated encounter against Portugal. The two Iberian rivals will meet at AT&T Stadium, Texas, at 2 AM on 7/7, Hanoi time.
Speaking to the press after Spain's victory at SoFi, California on 2/7, Yamal, 18, emphasized his focus on team success. "Facing Ronaldo would be an honor, but I am only thinking about winning, not who the opponent is", he stated. Yamal added, "The World Cup has just begun. Losing means elimination and going home in the knockout round. None of us want that. We know our quality and are not afraid of any opponent. We are Spain and we must show that on the field."

Spain dominated Austria, securing a 3-0 victory with a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a close-range header from Pedro Porro. This marked Spain's first World Cup knockout stage win since their 1-0 triumph over the Netherlands in the 2010 final. Yamal previously faced Ronaldo in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final, where Ronaldo scored one goal to secure a win for Portugal, while Yamal remained scoreless.

Yamal's 85 minutes on the field against Austria represented his longest playing time since the start of the 2026 World Cup. He confirmed regaining full fitness after an injury, expressing readiness to meet coach Luis de la Fuente's demands. "Little by little, I am feeling like myself again, making the necessary movements and dribbles, and I am very happy", the young forward shared. Yamal also highlighted the enthusiastic support from North American fans as a significant motivator, reiterating that playing in the World Cup is the ultimate dream for every young footballer.
Austria's coach, Ralf Rangnick, praised Spain's performance and Yamal's talent. "Spain showed their best form today. I dare say that we not only faced the European champions, but perhaps also the future world champions", the former Manchester United coach remarked, suggesting Spain's potential to win the 2026 World Cup.
