British tourist falls for musician thanks to a cruise ship date

Jodie Hughes decided to embark on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise with a musician she had just met after a chance encounter in Scotland.

In the summer of 2024, Jodie Hughes, a British-Irish tourist, traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, to attend Fringe, the world's largest street art festival. Her trip was solely to enjoy comedy and music shows. Jodie had no intention of seeking romance and certainly did not expect to fall for an unfamiliar street musician.

That changed when she stopped on Royal Mile and recognized two artists she had met several years prior in Dublin, Ireland. After striking up a conversation with the guitarist, Jodie learned he would be in Paris, where she lived, in three weeks. They joked about meeting again in the French capital.

Two days later, they had their first date. He spoke about his work performing on cruise ships and invited her to join him on an upcoming 12-day voyage. As they had only just met hours earlier, Jodie didn't rush to accept, preferring to see how their connection would develop during their planned meeting in Paris.

Their second date took place in the French capital. The musician continued to persuade her to accompany him on his sea journeys. One month later, they met again in Portsmouth and boarded a ship, beginning their nearly two-week exploration of the Mediterranean.

Jodie admitted to having feelings for her new acquaintance, though she considered embarking on a cruise with him "the boldest thing" she had ever done. She understood the trip could become a romantic memory or a complete disaster.

Having previously opted for budget hostels, the British tourist was overwhelmed upon stepping onto the cruise ship. "The ship was stunning and the most luxurious accommodation I have ever experienced," she remarked.

Throughout the 12 days onboard, Jodie enjoyed music performances, exercised each morning with ocean views, and explored various cities and islands along the route. The ship's extensive entertainment options provided her with personal space, preventing them from being constantly together. Jodie stated that her positive intuition about the musician in Edinburgh proved entirely accurate, and what she had envisioned as a "crazy date" transformed into a romantic reality.

During this period, they gradually learned about each other's interests, habits, and daily rhythms. While living in a small cabin at sea could test many couples, Jodie affirmed they "managed just fine." In their free time, they conversed, watched sunsets on deck, or danced in the rain in a deserted square in Lisbon, Portugal. The tourist shared that this was her happiest time, as she "almost cried with laughter every day" and "had never laughed so much in her life."

However, even as they disembarked, Jodie remained uncertain about the status of their relationship, with nothing concrete established. She had prepared many questions to ask before they parted ways.

Six weeks after that trip, she visited him again in Edinburgh. They celebrated an early Christmas together on another cruise in the Caribbean.

"Almost 18 months later, that adventure, and our love story, continues to progress," Jodie stated.
