Lee Thompson, co-founder of travel company Flash Pack, states that many people are falling into the trap of the "fare overwhelm effect." This is a state where travelers focus solely on the lowest price displayed on the booking screen, overlooking the associated consequences. Thompson notes that the cheapest flights often land at inconvenient times, such as late at night or when airports face overcrowding at passport control.
"I once landed after 5 PM and had to queue for two to three hours just to clear immigration," Thompson shared.

Waiting for too long, feeling tired and hungry after a flight, worsens a traveler's mood. By the time they leave the airport and reach their hotel, it is often midnight. This means completely wasting the first day of a vacation, a time meant for relaxation and enjoying the destination's atmosphere.
Budget airlines often choose to land at secondary airports, located far from city centers. The cost and time spent traveling from these airports to the city can sometimes exceed the money saved on the flight ticket.
Thompson states that if asked whether they would pay a small extra amount to land comfortably and enjoy a local dinner, most people would agree. However, that question never arises during the booking process.
"The excitement of seeing a cheap price completely overrides our rationality," he said.
The expert emphasizes that experienced travelers do not compare "cheapest" with "best" but rather "actual value." A slightly more expensive flight landing in the afternoon can save travelers a valuable day of their holiday. To ensure a quality vacation, Thompson offers some advice for travelers:

* **Prioritize landing times**: Always aim for flights landing in the mid to late afternoon. This timing allows travelers to check into their hotel and still have enough energy for a light dinner.* **Plan the first evening**: Do not let the first day pass in fatigue; schedule a simple yet special activity, such as a stroll or visiting a popular local eatery.* **Calculate total costs**: Factor in both the transfer fees from the airport to the city center and the value of lost time before deciding on the cheapest flight.
"The first meal at your destination is when you truly feel like you are on vacation. If you miss that moment by queuing at the airport or struggling on a cheap bus, regaining inspiration for the following days will be much harder," Thompson concluded.
