On 16/1, Bob Walker, 67, flew from Indonesia to Scotland to meet his close friend Peter Gould, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Walker spent a few hours having a beer with Gould before returning to Indonesia on 18/1.
The two men first met over 40 years ago while working as aviation engineers in Papua New Guinea in the 1980s. Despite living in different countries for most of their lives, they stayed in touch for years. They later reconnected in England, where both worked at Manchester Airport, and their families also grew close.
"There aren't many opportunities to truly say goodbye to someone, so I had to do this," Walker stated.

Walker also made an effort to find and bring along South Pacific Lager, the beer they used to drink in Papua New Guinea four decades ago. Moved by Walker's touching story, an acquaintance gifted him a six-pack of the beer.
On the morning of 17/1, the two friends sat together in Scotland, enjoying their favorite beer and reminiscing about their years of working, traveling, and raising families. Gould expressed his emotion at his friend's thoughtful gesture.
"He didn't have to do this, I'm truly grateful," Gould said, adding that he had advised his friend not to bother, but Walker came anyway.
Gould's daughter, Amanda, shared that the visit was a huge surprise. She was even unsure if Walker could make it to Scotland due to some procedural issues. While her father had many friends around the world who kept in touch by phone, Walker flew all the way there.
The sight of her father reunited with his longtime friend brought comfort to the entire family and created a moment they will forever cherish. Walker returned to Indonesia the next day, emphasizing that distance and time were insignificant compared to seeing his friend in person one last time.
