On 5/10, during his budget travel journey, Banshi attempted to set up a tent for an overnight stay within the grounds of Wat Photisomphon temple in Udon Thani province. However, police and temple management members instructed him to pack his belongings and leave, explaining that the temple grounds are not designated for overnight stays by non-residents.
Banshi claimed a monk had initially agreed to his overnight stay, and he repeatedly urged police and temple representatives to grant approval. However, after over 20 minutes of discussion, he was still requested to depart.
Police and temple representatives then offered Banshi a stay at a nearby hotel, costing around 400 baht (approximately 320,000 VND) per night, and offered transportation assistance. Banshi declined, citing his desire to save costs. A video posted on social media shows the traveler subsequently relocating to a gas station for the night.
The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media. Many criticized Banshi for traveling without sufficient funds for basic needs, emphasizing that tourists must respect local customs and regulations, particularly at religious sites.
One commenter praised the Thai police's polite handling of the situation but suggested that traveling without money, requesting free accommodation, and monetizing YouTube videos while on a tourist visa might violate regulations. The commenter also highlighted the requirement for tourists to demonstrate minimum financial solvency of 20,000 baht (approximately 15 million VND).
Other opinions suggested that travelers should seek prior permission before staying in public or religious spaces, and plan accordingly if they cannot afford accommodation. An Indian commenter expressed disappointment with Banshi's actions, advising him to seek support from his community or compatriots rather than relying solely on local generosity.
Amid the criticism, some commended the Thai police for their polite resolution of the incident and their proactive offer of alternative accommodation to the traveler.
