Vietnam leads as beach destination alternative to Thailand

A recent Bangkok Post survey reveals international tourists are increasingly choosing Vietnam for beach vacations, as Thailand's tourism sector faces challenges.

An online survey conducted by Thailand's Bangkok Post from 30/7 to 12/8 sought to identify alternative destinations to Thailand for tropical beach getaways. The results revealed Vietnam surpassing several Southeast Asian destinations, becoming the top alternative to Thailand, a long-standing leader in the sector.

Over 26% of participants chose Vietnam as their preferred alternative. The Philippines ranked second with 19%, followed by Indonesia (18%), Malaysia and Cambodia tied for 4th (13%), and Singapore (11%). Nearly 70% of survey participants believe tourists are increasingly shifting towards neighboring destinations over Thailand.

The Bangkok Post highlighted Phu Quoc as a rising star, with its pristine and picturesque beaches attracting a growing number of international tourists. In the first 7 months of the year, Vietnam welcomed 12 million international visitors, a surge of over 22% compared to the same period last year. Conversely, Thailand experienced a 7% decrease in tourist arrivals.

According to the survey, key areas Thailand needs to address to regain its leading position include safety and law enforcement, improved transportation infrastructure, image promotion, and the development of unique tourism products.

Overall, Thailand is still widely regarded by tourists for its rich cultural heritage, diverse cuisine, and renowned hospitality. Some consider it a budget-friendly destination, while others emphasize its blend of tradition and modernity.

Beyond beaches and food, nightlife is considered Thailand's most appealing aspect, surpassing historical sites, natural landscapes, and arts and cultural activities.

Vietnam boasts over 3,200 km of coastline and numerous renowned destinations such as Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. Many Vietnamese beaches consistently earn accolades from international magazines, ranking among the most beautiful in Asia and the world. Significant investments in beach tourism infrastructure include high-end resorts and hotels, and an increasing number of direct international flights to coastal cities.

In 2024, TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards ranked An Bang beach in Hoi An 5th and My Khe beach in Da Nang 6th among Asia's best beaches. In February, Conde Nast Traveler listed Vietnam as one of the most affordable travel destinations, highlighting Phu Quoc's pristine beaches and unique resorts.
