"The 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Vietnam and the US is a significant milestone. From former wartime adversaries, the two countries have overcome differences to become Comprehensive Strategic Partners," Vietnamese Ambassador to the US, Nguyen Quoc Dung, stated in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (TTXVN) published on 10/7/2025.
On 11/7/1995, Vietnam and the US announced their decision to normalize diplomatic relations. "This decision aligns with the current trends in the international situation and contributes positively to peace, stability, and development in Southeast Asia, as well as globally," then Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet stated.
On 10/9/2023, the two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development, 10 years after establishing a Comprehensive Partnership.
According to Ambassador Dung, the Vietnam - US relationship has flourished over the past 30 years because both sides have built trust, shared strategic interests, and committed to substantive cooperation.
"This is a rare journey in international relations. For Vietnam, this is the result of a consistent foreign policy: independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, and extensive integration for peace and development," the ambassador emphasized.

He highlighted four key factors contributing to the significant progress in bilateral relations over the past 30 years: the vision and political resolve of the leaders of both countries; the principle of mutual respect, especially for each other's independence, sovereignty, and political system.
Both sides have also made joint efforts in overcoming the consequences of the war, including detoxification, mine clearance, support for Agent Orange victims, and the search for missing personnel. A strong impetus has also come from economic and trade cooperation, with trade volume increasing more than 200 times in 30 years, making Vietnam a leading US partner in ASEAN.
The ambassador noted that the Vietnam - US relationship has maintained stability and positive momentum amid rapid global and regional changes. This demonstrates the relationship's strategic depth, mutual support, adaptability, and practical benefits for both sides.
In the future, the two countries can prioritize cooperation in several key areas: economic, trade, and investment cooperation, focusing on high technology, supply chains, agricultural technology, and digital transformation.
Cooperation in science, technology, and innovation is also a new highlight, especially in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and healthcare. In addition, education and training of high-quality human resources, national defense and security, people-to-people exchanges, and overcoming war consequences will continue to be important pillars.
"Over the past 30 years, Vietnam and the US have come a long way, building a special relationship, not only because of history, but also because of how the two countries have overcome the past to look towards the future," the ambassador said.
Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung hopes that in the coming years, the relationship between the two countries will continue to reach new heights, not only in the breadth of cooperation but also in the depth of mutual understanding and trust.
"We hope that our American friends will continue to accompany Vietnam, not only as Comprehensive Strategic Partners but also as sincere friends who share the aspiration for a peaceful, stable, and inclusive world. Vietnam will continue to be a reliable and responsible partner, working with the US to build a better future for the region and the world," the ambassador stated.
