Australian governor-general wears Vietnamese ao dai at state dinner

Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn wore a traditional Vietnamese ao dai at a state dinner hosted by President Luong Cuong.

At the dinner held at the Presidential Palace tonight, Governor-General Mostyn said the blue ao dai she was wearing was a gift from Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam, according to the Australian Embassy in Hanoi.

This was the first time Governor-General Mostyn has worn the traditional Vietnamese garment. The ao dai was designed by Ambassador Tam’s wife, featuring the blue of the Australian flag and stars on the sleeves, as well as images of golden wattle, Australia's national flower.

Speaking at the dinner, Governor-General Mostyn said she first visited Vietnam over 30 years ago and has visited many places. She stated that Australia's stability, prosperity, and security are deeply connected to the countries in the region, and Vietnam is at the forefront of these connections.

Governor-General Mostyn emphasized that Australia will be a steadfast and reliable partner in Vietnam's journey towards becoming a high-income country by 2045.

She said the two countries' elevation of diplomatic relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 3/2024 was a historic milestone, reflecting the deep strategic trust and shared ambitions. Since then, two-way trade has been growing, and both sides are committed to cooperating on climate change, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions commitments and ensure sustainable economic development.

She also affirmed that education is a solid path towards a better future and is just one of the many ways Australia and Vietnam are working together to build a brighter future for both nations.

President Luong Cuong emphasized that while Vietnam and Australia are geographically distant, they share many similarities. The two countries share many strategic interests and visions on regional and international issues, along with a shared desire to build a peaceful, stable, cooperative, and developed Asia-Pacific region, according to TTXVN (Vietnam News Agency).

The President said that despite historical ups and downs, cooperation between the two countries is at its most vibrant stage after more than half a century of diplomatic relations. For Vietnam, Australia is a friend, a partner, and a reliable companion in its journey of development and international integration over many decades.

According to the President, the community of over 350,000 Vietnamese people in Australia has made positive contributions to the socio-economic development of the host country as well as the good relationship between Vietnam and Australia.

The President also expressed confidence that the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to reach new heights, benefiting the people of both countries and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
