On 10/5, a British Royal Air Force A400M transport aircraft deployed six paratroopers, two military medics, and medical supplies to Tristan da Cunha island. This mission aimed to support the treatment of a suspected Hantavirus case there. This marks the first time the Royal Air Force has used a parachute drop to deliver medical personnel for humanitarian aid.
This operation was necessary because Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, lacks an airfield and is accessible only by sea. Travel from the nearest major port, Cape Town in South Africa, typically takes six days.

The A400M transport aircraft departed from Brize Norton base with a Voyager refueling aircraft, flying to Ascension island, which has a large airfield. The A400M then covered approximately 3,000 km to Tristan da Cunha, supported by the Voyager aircraft.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced on 8/5 that a British citizen on Tristan da Cunha was suspected of Hantavirus infection. The medical facility on the island, home to 221 residents, has limited capacity, and its oxygen reserves were depleted, prompting British authorities to launch this urgent parachute deployment.
An outbreak of the Andes strain of Hantavirus occurred on the Dutch cruise ship Hondius in April, resulting in at least three fatalities. Currently, there are six confirmed cases and eight suspected cases of the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the risk of a pandemic is low, as the virus has limited transmission among close contacts.

Airbus developed the A400M transport aircraft in the early 1980s to replace the US-made C-130 and C-160 series. The A400M made its first flight in 12/2009. Nearly 140 aircraft have been produced and are in service with the air forces of 10 countries.
The A400M can carry 37 tons of cargo, 116 fully equipped troops, or 25 military medics, depending on the mission. The aircraft has a cruise speed of over 780 km/h. Its range is 3,300 km when fully loaded, 4,500 km with 30 tons of cargo, and 6,400 km with 20 tons of cargo.
