"Following the wishes of Cambodians at home and abroad, and to express gratitude to US president Donald Trump, I, as the prime minister of Cambodia, have officially sent a letter to the Nobel peace prize committee, nominating Mr. Trump for this award," Hun Manet wrote on Facebook on the evening of 7/8.
According to the Cambodian prime minister, Trump's intervention is an example of "his special achievements, helping to de-escalate tensions in some of the world's most volatile regions."
"This timely intervention prevented a conflict that could have had serious consequences, playing a key role in paving the way for the restoration of peace," Hun Manet wrote in the letter.

Trump's July 26 call to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia broke the deadlock in mediation efforts between the two countries, a few days after the conflict erupted at the border.
Cambodia and Thailand then reached a ceasefire agreement on 28/7, after talks in Malaysia. On 7/8, the two countries agreed to ensure that hostile actions would not be repeated, allowing Southeast Asian observers to monitor the situation.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in early July proposed awarding the Nobel peace prize to president Trump, after the US leader promoted a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran. In June, Pakistan also announced the nomination of Trump for the Nobel peace prize for his contributions to Pakistan-India reconciliation.
According to the White House, Trump has fostered a series of peace agreements and ceasefires around the world, including the Israel-Iran, Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo, India-Pakistan, Serbia-Kosovo, and Egypt-Ethiopia conflicts.
"In six months in office, president Trump has brokered an average of one peace agreement or ceasefire per month. He fully deserves the Nobel peace prize," said spokesperson Leavitt.
