Satellite images of the Dalian shipyard in Liaoning province on 21/8 show the Type-004 aircraft carrier in dry dock, its bow section largely complete. According to US military specialized publication War Zone, the Type-004's hull currently measures approximately 320 m in length and 46 m in width.
"Aircraft carriers typically increase in size from the waterline upwards, so these dimensions will grow as the Type-004 warship is completed and receives its flight deck," War Zone editor Joseph Trevithick noted.

Trevithick indicated clear evidence that China's fourth aircraft carrier will be nuclear-powered. Satellite images reveal two distinct reactor compartment-like structures within the hull, similar to those found on US supercarriers.
These two box-shaped compartments previously appeared in images taken in 11/2025. One had been integrated into the hull, with the other positioned beneath a large crane.
"Nuclear reactors offer significant advantages, such as providing the ship with nearly unlimited operational range and supplying abundant power for advanced weapon systems, sensors, and equipment," Trevithick stated.

Chinese media have repeatedly reported in recent years on the nuclear reactor development program for new-generation warships and cargo vessels. However, Chinese officials have not yet confirmed if the Type-004 will use nuclear power.
Information regarding the overall design and capabilities of the Type-004 class has not yet been released. Simulation graphics and models, believed to represent the Type-004 warship, share many similarities with the US Ford-class aircraft carriers, as well as new aircraft carrier designs being developed worldwide.
One key feature of this design is a streamlined command island positioned further toward the stern, increasing the operational area on the flight deck.

The Chinese navy confirmed in 3/2024 that it is building its fourth aircraft carrier, asserting that the program is progressing smoothly without any technical issues.
"The relatively rapid construction pace of the Type-004 reflects the current capabilities and scale of China's naval shipbuilding industry," Trevithick observed. "The Pentagon previously stated the Chinese navy aims to commission 9 aircraft carriers by 2035."
