Images released on 18/8 show the prototype in flight at a facility in China. The aircraft features a fixed wing above the fuselage with rotors at each end capable of rotating up to 90 degrees depending on the flight mode.
The prototype's engine design is similar to the US Bell MV-75 tiltrotor, also known as the V-280 Valor, with only part of the drive system able to rotate. This differs from the V-22 Osprey's fully rotating engine design, potentially simplifying the structure and enhancing operational efficiency.

The Chinese tiltrotor has a T-shaped tail for directional control. Another image reveals two small cockpit windows and a larger passenger entry door on the right side. The aircraft has three retractable landing gears.
Thomas Newdick, an editor at the US military website War Zone, believes the Chinese prototype appears similar in size to the Italian-made AW609. It has a maximum takeoff weight of over 7.6 tons, compared to the MV-75's 14 tons and the V-22's 21 tons for vertical takeoff.
"The Chinese tiltrotor will likely be described as a commercial vehicle. However, if successful, it will undoubtedly attract the attention of the Chinese military due to its versatility and ability to operate from short runways or amphibious assault ships," Newdick said.

According to Newdick, the Chinese tiltrotor is too small to replace the Z-8/Z-18 medium-lift transport helicopter, which has a maximum takeoff weight of nearly 14 tons. However, a naval variant could potentially take over some roles currently filled by the Z-9 and Z-20.
"Operational experience with a smaller tiltrotor will provide valuable information for developing a scaled-up version or a larger aircraft of the same type. Like the AW609, the Chinese tiltrotor will be significantly cheaper than the V-22, albeit with lower performance, particularly in terms of payload," Newdick commented.
