Images from the EarthCam online camera system show the numbers "8647", formed by several patches of brown, discolored grass, appearing on the lawn at the National Mall at least since the afternoon of 10/6. These markings were not visible in photos of the area on 5/6.
The number sequence "8647" is commonly used by a segment of people who oppose former President Donald Trump to express dissent. However, the US government considers this a code threatening his life. The number "86" is often used in the restaurant industry to mean removing or getting rid of a dish or a customer, while "47" is understood to refer to Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

The National Mall is a landscaped park located near the center of Washington D.C., situated between the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and Capitol Hill.
The cause of the grass discoloration has not yet been determined.
On the afternoon of 11/6, National Park Service personnel cordoned off the area, while some National Guard soldiers directed people away from the lawn.
A spokesperson for the US Department of the Interior stated, "This outrageous vandalism at the National Mall will not be tolerated. The Department of the Interior takes all threats against the US president very seriously. The US Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable."

This number sequence previously sparked controversy after former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey was prosecuted in connection with a social media post featuring seashells arranged to form "86 47". Comey denied allegations that the post implied a call for violence against President Trump.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said that anyone involved in or promoting political violence or a culture of assassination must be strongly condemned.
