The 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. on 31/8 (2:17 a.m. on 1/9 Hanoi time), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located 27 km northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a depth of 8 km.
The Bakhtar News Agency, citing local emergency response officials, reported at least 250 fatalities, noting that this is a preliminary figure and could rise. The affected areas are in remote locations with limited communication, significantly hindering access.
Strong tremors were felt in the capital, Kabul. Internet outages occurred in some areas of Afghanistan.
