Ecuador declares national holiday after World Cup knockout qualification

Ecuador's president announced a national holiday on 26/6, allowing the country to celebrate its football team's historic victory over Germany and their advancement to the World Cup knockout stage.

"Thank you to the players and coaches, who have risen and brought this immense joy to the nation despite the criticism and insults they endured during difficult times," President Daniel Noboa posted on social media, announcing the national holiday for 26/6.

President Noboa attended the match between Ecuador and Germany at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on 25/6. Ecuador secured a 2-1 victory, qualifying for the knockout stage for the first time since 2006.

Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, quickly took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. The South American team rallied with goals from Nilson Angulo in the 9th minute and Gonzalo Plata in the 77th minute, securing the victory.

Despite suffering their first loss of the tournament, the European team had already secured their spot in the next round and remained at the top of Group E with 6 points. Ivory Coast ranked second with 6 points, and Ecuador ranked third with 4 points.

Fans across Ecuador poured into the streets to celebrate the victory and commemorate one of the country's most memorable achievements at the World Cup.
