The US Department of Justice announced on 26/6 that the domains were identified with assistance from FIFA, the world football governing body, and other entities, including NBC Universal and Warner Bros.
These websites illegally offered copyrighted content to users by livestreaming ongoing World Cup matches.
"These piracy sites not only violate copyright law but also expose viewers to numerous potential threats, including malware attacks and insecure connections that could leak personal and financial data," stated Eric Weindorf, special agent in charge of US Homeland Security Investigations.

The US Department of Justice added that servers and domains involved in pirating tournament matches were discovered and dismantled in Peru and Bulgaria. Many similar intervention operations were simultaneously launched in Croatia, Romania, Poland, and Colombia.
The 2026 World Cup commenced on 11/6 in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Matches are being held in 16 cities across these three nations until 19/7.
According to FIFA data, stadium attendance for matches has set records. Meanwhile, research firm Nielsen indicated that last week's matches were among the highest-rated television programs, with the US national team's victory over Australia leading the list.
